Profile Description

The Museum is located within the archaeological area of the c.da Muratore, where was found a necropolis consisting of three hypogeum entirely excavated in the rock, one of which, the largest, is located inside the museum. It consists of two sections: the ethno-anthropological and the archaeological section.

The first, consists of the collection of Father Abate, donated to the city, a small collection of archaeological finds from various sources, objects and working tools that are a testimony of the local peasant culture together with a unique collection of stuffed or formalin made animals.

The archaeological section displays some artefacts found in the excavations conducted in c.da Muratore and some artefacts from the archaeological surveys of the area carried out in Cozzo del Morto, Cozzo Zara, Monte Rotola Vecchia and Cozzo Re,that testify the antiquity of the human settlement in these places that can be traced back to the Prehistory.

In 2000 and 2004, the archaeologists Valentino and  Fontana, in collaboration with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Palermo, launched two campaigns of excavations which brought to light the build up area and the public area of a probable “pagus ” that can be traced back to the Roman Imperial Age.

As for the settlement, three main epochs have been identified: a more recent medieval epoch, another that is older than the others and dating back to the late- ancient imperial Age and the last, dating to the Roman-Hellenic Age. A considerable number of finds as amphorae, jugs, early Christian oil-lamps, bronze coins and fragments of pottery in black paint was founded. Moreover, a polylobated thermal plant was found with a series of annexed and afferent rooms revolving around a small courtyard, which have a very good paved floor and a sort of well preserved ambulatory.

The ancient structures brought to light was restored and the artefacts found in the excavations filed, restored and placed in the windows by the staff of the Superintendence – Dr. Vassallo and Dr. Cucco. The Museum was inaugurated on August 4, 2011.
