Civic Museum of Montemaggiore Belsito
Museo Civico di Montemaggiore Belsito

Profile Description

The Civic Museum “G.Bellomo” is a ethno-anthropological museum that collects many ancient objects, grave goods and tools related to the working and craft activities and to the cultural forms expressed in the agro-pastoral context of Montemaggiore and Belsito. Therefore the museum represents the better instrument to valorize and transmit the historical and cultural identity of the local community and to favour the knowledge of the territory full of enornous pastures, bovine and ovine farms and with a good production of cereals and legumes.

The agriculture, together with the farming, represents one of the main resources for the local community of the territory still today. Among the craft manufactures, together with that related to the wooden and iron objects, a particular place is reserved to that of the embroidery. Under the ethno-anthropological point of view, this centre is  a site where those signs that the citizens have impressed over time through their elaborated cultural forms  and that the Civic Museum contributes to let be known from the new generations.

The Civic Museum of Montemaggiore Belsito was instituted in 1999 with an act of the local council and it was realized in 2012 after the ultimation of the works of the Polypurpose Centre “Giovanni Paolo II”, a modern structure that houses even the Library and the local theatre. The Museum occupies an ample sector of two floors where more than 500 ancient objects are exposed, working tools, common tools and grave goods of the local rural culture.

The realization of the Museum was realized thanks to the disponibility and the collaboration of professor Leonardo Runfola that gave the objects and the tools of the agro-pastern culture under a  gratuitous loan; in fact, they belonged to his own collection after so many years dedicated to a passionate work of recovery and preservation. He subscribed a cooperation with the institution. The Civic Museum was entitled to professor Giovanna Bellomo, wife of professor Funfola, who died prematurely and who was the headmaster of the comprehensive school Mons. Arrigo di Montemaggiore, for the activity made in the cultural and social field toward the community of Montemaggiore.
