Profile Description

The Civic Museum “Don Giuseppe Guarnieri” was inaugurated in 2004 and titled in 2008. It stands inside the architectural context of the “Chiostro San Francesco dei Frati Minori Riformati” whose restore was finished in 2001. There have been several exhibitions: the anthological by Franco Lo Cascio, the beetles by Vittorio Aliquò, the bronze sculptures by Vincenzo Gennaro, several photographic, painting and impromptu exhibitions. An important archaeological exhibition “Memories from Earth” was also hosted and included the exposure of Phiale Aurea.

The museum houses the following permanent exhibitions: almost 1000 archaeological finds, the ethno-anthropological museum of the Puppet Opera and the adjoining theater, sacred art, collection of over 4,000 original holy cards, the geological emergencies constituting the Geopark.

The number of total visitors (paying and non-paying) is estimated at about 2000-2500 per year (all recorded). The visits double during some special events. The Museum has an adequate furniture with illuminated display cabinets and anti-theft system security.

The Civic Museum of Caltavuturo was born in 1995 with the start of the works that brought to light the entire monastic complex of the “Chiostro (cloister) di San Francesco”. The cloister was previously used as a school and police station. The building was abandoned in the early 80s. The restoration works were completed in 2001 The museum also has an elevator that still needs to be put into operation.

The idea of the museum born in order to accommodate the archaeological finds deriving from the excavations of Mount Riparato. A socio urban-assett has been created over time around the museum consisting in the renovation of St. Francis Square in front of the museum itself, the construction of a cultural and restorating centre under the square of the Museum and the realization of a lestoration lab for the preservation of the stone and wood material annexed to the museum through Via IV Aprile and connected internally with the museum spaces of the archaeological section.
