Description:

Ule Mask (the curly), IV century BC, brown clay, probably from Lipari. Large mask depicting an already elderly woman (a wife or a mother), popular among the characters of Menander’s plays. The face, quite full, is covered with a thick layer of whitish clay and is characterized by the large protruding eyes. The thick curly red hair is held by a belt, while a tuft of hair is knotted just above the forehead. There are two large disc earrings applied to the ears.
