Manna from the myth to the reality

SHORT DESCRIPTION:

The documentary exhibition takes into account some aspects of manna obtained from various vegetal species, and containing diverse properties and uses, but especially that of the ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia and F. ornus) which is connected to a particular local culture that still survives in the countryside of Castelbuono and Pollina, and which was common to other towns in the coastal belt of Palermo and Trapani until a few decades ago.

The show, based on historical documents, images and characteristic tools, highlights the influence of ash trees process of harvesting on the rural society, the carving techniques of the ash tree, the collection, manufacturing and trading of manna, its properties and the past, present and future uses. Ample attention is also given to the role played by the ash trees about the physiognomy of the landscape that is unique and highly expressive.
