Museo Civico di Petralia Soprana

Museo Civico di Petralia Soprana

Profile Description

In 2009, the Municipal Technical Office has prepared a project for the improvement of the premises of the former district prison changing it in a Museum. The rooms on the first floor basement were used as a museum for the re-enactment of the past and the present, while the second floor has been designed to house an archaeological museum,  to allow the display of the archaeological  artefacts found in the municipal area and mainly those found in the excavations of Santa Marina.

In 1358 the monumental complex located in Petralia was created housing the Convent of the Discalced Carmelite Friars. After the unification of Italy, the monastery became a property of the state; at the end of the eighteenth century was in part destined to host the Town Offices and it is still home of the Town Hall.

While the portion relating to the two basement levels of the former convent was used as a prison until 1955, of which Petralia was administrative head of the district. These locals, place of the former district prison, were restored in 1990 after a project financed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
