Civic Museum “S. Naselli” – Gangi

Profile Description

The Museum System of Gangi, is hosted at Palazzo Sgadari, a 19th-century building that belonged to the Sgadari family. The three floors of the building are designed as “Palace of Culture”. In addition to the Archaeological Section, it also hosts the prestigious Gianbecchina Picture Gallery featuring numerous works donated by master Gianbecchina to the town of Gangi, as well as a Weaponry Museum and an ethnoanthropological section in the former garage.

The Civic Museum Civico di Gangi was established in 1958 thanks to the effort Santo Naselli, who was fond of local history, and of professor Santo Ferraro, the town librarian. In 1960 the Ministry of Education authorized its creation and, in 1965, it validated the museum by inserting it in the ministerial list of minor Italian museums. From 1967 until to the 1980s, the museum was managed by the librarian, Prof. Ferraro, until he retired.

For a long period it was closed. In 1995, on the initiative of the then Councillor for Cultural Heritage, Salvatore Farinella, the Museum of Gangi, was moved to its current location and expanded with other sections that have given it its current splendor.
